Winter time is over folks! Time to get ready for summer and liven up your yard. We are now entering prime watering season here is Southern California. That means your yard needs water and water costs are on the rise. State water regulators have approved certain fines for wasting your water. Even though we are not in a drought, San Diego still has permanent mandatory water restrictions in place. This means that if your irrigation system is not working properly, you can be fined and fined per day!
However, there are some steps you can take!
1.Run your sprinkler system
During the spring, you want to run your sprinklers to make sure that everything is running correctly and to make any necessary adjustments. This is also a great time to have an irrigation audit completed on your system. As the weather changes, so should your system. Different temperatures call for different amounts of water and timing of when to water.
2.Summer drought
How do you handle drought in the summer? Upgrade your smart controllers! They are designed to apply a precise amount of water to your landscape by modifying water schedules on a daily bases using the ET watering schedules. Consider replacing nozzles with high efficiency nozzles and pressure regulation. They are designed to apply water with a more uniform coverage at low application rates which lowers run off. For your planter beds, consider having drip irrigation put in place of spray irrigation. Replacing your sprinklers with drip irrigation is a great way to save water. By adding water to the plant and not the bare soil, you will have water efficiency and your savings can be as high as 60-70%.
3.Common Mistakes
Ever hear anyone say, “set it and forget it?”. Well, that is one of the worst mistakes you can make with your lawn watering. If you do not change the watering throughout the seasons, you could be watering too much or too little. So, investing in soil moisture sensors you can really eliminate over or under watering your yard.
