DECEMBER 2017 – Christmas is about giving, and at LaBahn’s we are proud of a recent project we completed to help improve the landscape and outlook for one San Diego family that will have a lasting impact throughout the New Year and beyond. This renovation – which included the removal of dying grass and the installation of drought tolerant, native plants, and a low-pressure, drip irrigation system – beautified the homeowner’s property and their neighborhood.
It all started when Mike LaBahn learned about an opportunity to work with Rebuilding Together San Diego – a local non-profit organization that provides free critical repairs and renovations to low-income homeowners across San Diego. In their wake, they leave safer homes, better lives, and a new sense of community. What better way is there to give back to our community than to partner with this organization?
Rebuilding Together San Diego was in the process of undertaking a complete renovation of the Encanto home of Alma and her four young children. Alma’s yard was also in need of a major overhaul. It consisted of patches of dying grass – which can take a lot of money, water and energy to revive.
In addition to having Autism, Alma’s 10 year-old son has a severe respiratory allergy to grass. It was clear to us that Alma and her family would benefit from a more native landscape that requires little water or maintenance.
The project took just a few hours of planning and a day’s work for a crew of five to make a dramatic impact for this homeowner. LaBahn’s installed a low-pressure drip irrigation system on a timer to provide water to new native plants including Agave which provides a bold texture and structure to the landscape; Rosemary – a perennial evergreen shrub with a woodsy fragrance; and Lantana – a fast growing plant with a bright foliage that lasts throughout much of the summer. Mulch was installed to provide instant curb appeal, control weeds, and provide erosion control.
What a difference a day made. The results were overwhelming to Alma, her children, and our team from LaBahn’s. Alma’s son almost didn’t recognize the house when he got home from school that day.
Alma’s new landscape will require little maintenance. Her new plants will need light trimming. Throughout the winter, they can be watered lightly once a week using her new timed, drip irrigation system. In the summer, she’ll need to water just twice a week.
The completed project is a perfect illustration of LaBahn’s commitment to water conservation while providing beautiful, low-maintenance landscapes with tons of curb appeal. Even more importantly, our involvement in this renovation underscores our belief in the importance of giving back.
While Alma and her family were thrilled with the end result, at LaBahn’s we were overjoyed to add beauty to this corner of San Diego and bring such happiness to a neighbor we can now call a friend. We look forward to taking on more projects like this one in the future.
