Years of drought and dry brush in San Diego has created a landscape that is prime for wildfires.
One way to protect yourself is to create a proper defensible space around your property. The city of San Diego has broken this up between two zones. Zone 1 extends 35 feet from your property. Zone two, is the slope portion of your property extending another 65 feet. As a San Diego property owner, it is your responsibility to manage the brush in both zones around your property. It is the first line of defense against wild fires. You are giving firefighters the space needed and a chance to protect you and your property.
The city regularly does door-to-door inspections on properties along canyon rim that have been identified in the proactive brush management program. We have compiled some of the key things you need to do to manage the area around your property to stay compliant.
In Zone 1, ensure you are:
- Trimming tree canopies.
- Remove any dead wood.
- Cut branches to a minimum of 10 feet from any structures and trees.
- Remove any leaf litter from your yard, roof and gutters.
- Remove any combustible materials around your property and structures.
In Zone 2:
- Create a defensible space by removing dead material.
- Cut or mow annual grass to a maximum of 2”.
- Trim any tree canopies regularly at a minimum of 10 feet between other trees retaining a canopy coverage of 10%.
- Make sure you remove all dead vegetation
- Thin living vegetation
- Prune remaining vegetation
- Including Horizontal and vertical vegetation between shrubs
Broken down this seems like a lot to manage and not everyone has the time. I don’t know about you, but my weekends and evenings are busy… So, what next?
