Our world is changing rapidly. I remember the first time my dad brought home a cell phone. It was a huge brick and cost a fortune. I remember our first computer, it was a radio shack Tandy 1000. I remember the first time I heard the Eagles on CD in one of my dad’s friends’ cars (it sounded amazing). In the past 30 years there have been significant changes in our world in every front. Landscaping has historically been behind the eight ball of the technological revolution, but we are quickly catching up.
Every single one of our crew leaders have an iPhone for up to date photos and videos as well as electronic time keeping. Our trucks are all equipped with GPS for the most efficient routing possible. Our account managers each have iPads for on the spot quoting of extra work speeding up the approval processes and moving work forward.
Labor has been a major issue in our industry, we are driven by the availability of labor, when labor gets scarce, it becomes more valuable (read= expensive). Recently, the goal of solving the labor crisis in this county in the landscape industry has come to the forefront. Autonomous lawn mowers are here. They are legitimate. And they may just solve that labor crisis if we are willing to adapt.
“I’ve been in the landscaping business for 35 years,” said John Vlay, CEO of Graze Mowing. “Gas-powered, manually operated mowers present several problems, including low wages and high turnover, pollution, and safety. In the U.S., 6,000 people are injured every year, ranging from lacerations to amputations. There’s a huge opportunity for improvement.” (source: Graze announces new autonomous robot for commercial lawn mowing (therobotreport.com)
We have the opportunity to do better. The goal isn’t to replace people, the goal is to be able to be more efficient, affordable, and effective for our clients. The goal is to be able to grow without the delay of labor shortages. To improve our client’s experiences. So, welcome to the wonderful new world, it is here. And it is not likely to change, we ARE changing, are you able to go with the changes?
If you want to work with a progressive landscaping company that is evolving and utilizing technology to better serve our clients, we are here for you. We would love to provide a quote for you or your client!
